From Heartbreak to Hits: Natalie Jane Opens Up About ‘Sick To My Stomach’ and Upcoming World Tour

— October 23, 2024 —

Under the sunlit skies of Los Angeles, with “not a cloud in the sky,” 20-year-old rising pop artist Natalie Jane reflected on her new album Sick To My Stomach, her upcoming world tour, and her creative process during an °1824 press conference. Despite a busy year, Natalie exuded a relaxed and confident energy as she shared exclusive insights into her journey.

Natalie kicked off the conference discussing her new track “Tattoos,” recalling the unpredictability of its creation. “I went into that session not knowing what I was going to say at all,” she said with a laugh. For someone who typically enters songwriting sessions with a clear idea, this was a rare moment of uncertainty. After taking a five-minute break, inspiration suddenly struck, and the melody came to her effortlessly. “It was a tough day, but I’m happy with the outcome,” she reflected, highlighting the spontaneous nature of her process.

When asked about her pre-show rituals, Natalie revealed a combination of caffeine and vocal warm-ups—two essentials for getting stage-ready. However, she humorously shared that seasonal allergies hit her for the first time this year, adding an unexpected challenge to her performances. Despite that, her resilience and love for live shows shine through. “Everyone in the audience is there because they want to be there… While anyone can be mean on the internet, on tour it’s a room full of love. A hater isn’t going to buy a ticket,” she joked, noting that her live performances feel like a community full of love and support.

A significant source of inspiration for Natalie comes from TikTok. “I see other people’s stories and write about that for inspiration,” she said, adding that while she’s currently in a happy place, her music often taps into emotions far from joyous. “Right now, I am very happy, but my music is not,” she admitted, explaining that she finds inspiration in the complexities of human experiences, often writing about love, anxiety, and self-discovery. Her fans, who relate deeply to these themes, are affectionately called the Twisted Tummy Club (TTC). “The TTC is for anyone who’s ever felt sick to their stomach from anxiety or love,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of creating a community where people can connect and feel understood.

When reflecting on Sick To My Stomach, Natalie shared how special the album is to her, noting that “all the songs sound different.” The album spans a variety of styles, from acoustic to electric guitar and straight pop. While she admits it feels “all over the place” coming from one person, she still finds it “very special.” Looking ahead, Natalie mentioned that her next project will have a more cohesive sound, even though she enjoys exploring different genres. Her favorite track off the album? “June”—a song she describes as emotionally distinct, dedicated to her high school boyfriend. “It’s just me and an acoustic guitar,” she said, highlighting the raw vulnerability of the track.

As Natalie looks ahead, she’s thrilled about her upcoming world tour, which will take her across the United States, Australia, and Europe. “I’ve never been to Australia, so I’m really looking forward to that,” she shared. Equally exciting for her is the tour merchandise, which she’s approached with a clothing brand mindset. “I’ve always wanted to start a clothing brand, and this is the closest I can get to that for now,” she explained. She emphasized that she’s designing the merch to feel less like traditional tour merch and more like a true clothing line.

Reflecting on her evolution as an artist, Natalie pointed to the freedom that social media has given her. “Without it, I wouldn’t be here today,” she said. “It’s free marketing, and you can choose how people view you. Artists didn’t have this freedom 10-20 years ago.” For Natalie, being able to post whatever she wants without needing anyone's approval has been a game-changer.

When asked about her musical influences, Natalie cited a diverse range of artists, including Billie Eilish, Bishop Briggs, and Labrinth. “Billie does whatever she wants, and I love that,” she said, adding that Labrinth’s unique style and Bishop’s powerful voice have had a lasting impact on her.

As she continues to navigate the ups and downs of the music industry, Natalie remains grounded in her passion. “The easy part is doing what I love—singing and creating. But the hardest part is the constant comparison. It’s tough not to think, ‘What was this person doing at my age?’” she shared. However, with characteristic optimism, she reminded everyone, “Everyone’s on their own path, and I’m on my own journey. You’ve just got to ride it and see where it takes you.”
